Flying to the United Kingdom: a guide for students

Travel photo for flights to United Kingdom

Students flying home to the UK from US universities travel in the same two windows every year. This guide covers the fare calendar, routings and baggage, and the quickest ways from the airport to your university.

United Kingdom at a glance

  • Main gateways: London Heathrow (LHR) and Gatwick (LGW), Manchester (MAN), Edinburgh (EDI), Birmingham (BHX).
  • Busiest fare periods: about December 10 to January 5, and June to August.
  • Often better-value periods: October to November, and late January to March.

When to fly

The US fall semester usually ends in mid-December and the spring semester in early May, which lines up with the UK Christmas break and summer holidays. Those are the periods when fares climb, so book as soon as your exam dates are fixed and ask us to compare days either side.

Routings and baggage

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American, Delta and United have flown non-stop from many US gateways to London, with some routes to Manchester and Edinburgh. Basic economy fares across the Atlantic often exclude checked bags. If you are moving, standard economy with a bag included, or premium economy, can cost less than adding bags later.

Airports and getting around

From Heathrow, the Elizabeth Line and Heathrow Express reach central London, and National Express coaches run from Heathrow to many university cities, which saves hauling bags through the Underground. Book rail tickets in advance, and if you are aged 16 to 25 or a mature student, ask about a Railcard for discounted train fares.

How to pay less on flights to the UK

  • Skip the two peaks. Fares rise from about December 10 to January 5 and from June to August. October to November and late January to March are often better value.
  • Compare gateways. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and US airlines have flown non-stop from many US cities to London, with some routes to Manchester and Edinburgh. Flying into a regional airport can be cheaper than London plus a train.
  • Price the baggage. Basic economy across the Atlantic often excludes a checked bag, so standard economy or premium economy can cost less than paying for bags later if you are moving.
  • Save on the ground leg. National Express coaches from Heathrow and advance train tickets, with a Railcard if you qualify, cut the cost of getting to your university.

Questions, answered.

When are flights to the UK most expensive?

Fares peak from about December 10 to January 5 and from June to August. October to November and late January to March are often better value.

Does basic economy include a checked bag?

Often not. If you are moving a lot of belongings, compare standard economy with a bag included or premium economy against the cost of extra bags at the airport.

Do I need an ETA to enter the UK?

Many visitors, including US citizens, need an electronic travel authorization before travel, and students on longer courses may need a visa instead. Use the official UK government site only.
