Flying to Jamaica: a travel guide

Travel photo for flights to Jamaica

Jamaica is among the closest Caribbean destinations to the US, served by many non-stop flights. The right airport depends on whether you are heading for the resorts, or for Kingston and family.

Jamaica at a glance

  • Main gateways: Montego Bay Sangster (MBJ) and Kingston Norman Manley (KIN).
  • Busiest fare periods: mid-December to April, and summer holidays.
  • Often better-value periods: May, and September to early December.
  • Hurricane season: roughly June to November.

When to fly

The dry winter season is the busiest, so fares and hotel prices peak, and book early for Christmas and Easter. Hurricane season runs from about June to November, so consider flexible fares or travel insurance if you travel then.

After Hurricane Melissa

Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica in October 2025 and caused severe damage, particularly in the west. The main airports have reopened, and tourism has been recovering, but recovery has been uneven. Before booking, ask your hotel or host about the current state of facilities and of the places you want to visit.

Routings and baggage

Several US airlines have flown non-stop to Montego Bay and Kingston from cities such as New York, Miami, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and others. Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare, and low-cost fares often charge for checked bags, so compare the total cost.

Airports and getting around

Arrange transfers in advance through your hotel or a licensed operator. In Kingston, ask your host about the safest routes and times to travel, and use licensed taxis rather than unmarked vehicles. Read your government’s travel advisory, which can differ by area.

How to pay less on flights to Jamaica

  • Avoid the dry-season peak. Mid-December to April is busiest and most expensive. May, and September to early December, are often better value.
  • Compare Montego Bay and Kingston. Fares into the two airports can differ, so price both, and choose by where you are staying.
  • Mind hurricane season. It runs roughly June to November, so a cheap fare then is worth pairing with a flexible fare or insurance.
  • Compare the total cost. Low-cost fares often charge for checked bags, so compare the total, not the headline price.

Before you go

Check passport validity and Jamaica’s current entry rules for your nationality through the official government portal. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are commonly recommended, and mosquito-borne illness such as dengue is a risk, so insect protection matters. See the CDC page for Jamaica. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.
