Flying to Rwanda: a guide for students and mission groups

Rwanda is compact, well organized and popular with service teams and students. A little planning around seasons, the remembrance period and baggage makes the trip smoother.

Rwanda at a glance

  • Main international gateway: Kigali International Airport (KGL), about 5 km from the center of Kigali.
  • Busiest fare periods: June to September, and December.
  • Often better-value periods: March to May, and October to November.
  • Remembrance: Kwibuka begins on April 7 each year.

When to fly

The dry season, June to September, and December are the busiest times. March to May and October to November, the rainy periods, often have better fares.

Kwibuka, the annual period of remembrance of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, begins on April 7. It is observed with commemorations across the country, and the schedule of some activities and services changes, so ask your host and plan community projects around it. Students should book early for June to August, and mission teams should check dates against their host’s calendar.

Routings and baggage

Most travelers from the US connect, for example with Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Qatar Airways via Doha, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or KLM via Amsterdam. RwandAir flies from Kigali to destinations in Europe and Africa. Schedules change, so confirm the current options.

Rwanda bans non-biodegradable plastic bags, and they can be confiscated on arrival, so pack without them. Check baggage allowances on the exact fare, as they vary.

Airports and getting around

Kigali’s airport is about 5 km from the city center, so transfers are short. Use a licensed airport taxi or a driver arranged by your host.

Rwanda’s main highways are paved and link Kigali to towns such as Musanze, Huye and Rubavu. Groups commonly hire a private minibus or coaster for intercity travel. Ask your host for guidance on the best option for your route.

How to pay less on flights to Rwanda

  • Use the rainy periods. June to September and December are the busiest. March to May and October to November often have better fares, though rain can slow travel outside Kigali.
  • Compare the connections. Most travelers from the US connect, for example with Ethiopian via Addis Ababa, Qatar via Doha, Turkish via Istanbul or KLM via Amsterdam. Price all of them.
  • Plan around April. Rwanda’s remembrance period, Kwibuka, falls in April, so check your dates against it.
  • Pack without plastic bags and check the allowance. Non-biodegradable bags can be confiscated on arrival, and baggage allowances vary by fare.

Before you go

Check passport validity and Rwanda’s current entry rules through the official government portal for every traveler. Requirements depend on nationality and purpose of travel, and we do not quote fees here.

Yellow fever: the CDC recommends vaccination for travelers to Rwanda, and a certificate may be required if you arrive from a country with yellow fever risk. Check the rule against your routing.

Malaria: the CDC lists malaria risk across Rwanda, including Kigali, so prevention tablets, repellent and bed nets are standard advice.

Other advice: hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are commonly recommended. Also check the current CDC notices for the Great Lakes region before you book, as outbreak notices there can change quickly. See the CDC page for Rwanda. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time.

Health notes below reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as we last checked them (October 2026). Notices and outbreak levels change quickly, so read the current page before you book vaccines.
