Flying to Honduras: a guide for mission groups and service teams

Travel photo for flights to Honduras

Honduras hosts many medical, agricultural and building teams. The right airport, and arranged transport on the ground, are the two most important planning decisions.

Honduras at a glance

  • Main international airports: San Pedro Sula (SAP) in the north; Palmerola International (XPL), near Comayagua, serving Tegucigalpa and central Honduras; Roatán (RTB) in the Bay Islands.
  • Busiest fare periods: June to July, Holy Week and December.
  • Often better-value periods: September to November, and February to March.
  • Rainy and storm season: roughly June to November.

When to fly

Summer service teams make June and July busy, and Holy Week and December are also high-demand. September to November, the rainy and storm season, and February to March are often better value, though weather can disrupt plans in the wetter months.

Which airport?

  • San Pedro Sula (SAP): the usual entry for northern Honduras, including many NGO, medical and agricultural teams.
  • Palmerola (XPL): a modern airport in Comayagua that serves Tegucigalpa and central Honduras.
  • Roatán (RTB): mainly for the Bay Islands and coastal outreach.

American and United have flown non-stop from US hubs such as Miami, Dallas and Houston to Honduras. Routes and schedules change, so we confirm the options when we quote.

Arrivals and getting around

Coordinate every airport pickup with your host organization, and have a representative meet your team at or just outside the terminal with arranged transport.

Many hosts advise traveling only in daylight and on major paved highways, such as the CA-5 between San Pedro Sula and Comayagua and Tegucigalpa, and using a private chartered bus for groups. Check your government’s travel advisory for the regions you will visit, as advice differs by area, and follow your host’s guidance.

Before you go

Check passport validity and Honduras’ current entry rules for every traveler through the official government source, and confirm the rules for each nationality in your group.

Health: the CDC lists malaria risk in some lowland and rural areas, including parts of the Caribbean coast and the Mosquitia, while the main cities are generally lower risk. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are commonly recommended, and dengue is a concern, so insect protection matters. A yellow fever certificate is not normally needed for travel from the US. See the CDC page for Honduras for current notices. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time.

Safety: read your government’s travel advisory for the regions you will visit, and follow your host’s advice on routes and timing.

Health notes below reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as we last checked them (October 2026). Notices and outbreak levels change quickly, so read the current page before you book vaccines.
