Egypt combines Nile cruises, ancient sites, Red Sea resorts and a huge, busy capital. Planning around the weather and choosing the right airport saves time and money.

Egypt at a glance

  • Main gateway: Cairo International (CAI). Resort airports include Hurghada (HRG) and Sharm el-Sheikh (SSH), and Luxor (LXR) serves the south.
  • Busiest fare periods: December to February, plus Easter and major holidays.
  • Often better-value periods: late spring, summer and early autumn, when it is hot.
  • Climate: cool and pleasant from about October to April, very hot in summer in the south.

When to fly

The cooler months are best for walking around Giza, Luxor and Aswan, which is why winter fares and hotel prices are highest. In the heat of summer, sightseeing is best done early in the morning, and Red Sea resorts stay popular. Ramadan changes opening hours and daily rhythms, and its dates move each year, so check them before booking.

Routings and baggage

EgyptAir has flown non-stop from the US East Coast to Cairo. Other common routes connect through Europe with airlines such as Lufthansa, KLM, British Airways or Air France, through Istanbul with Turkish Airlines, or through the Gulf with Qatar Airways, Emirates or Etihad. Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare, so check before you pack.

Airports and getting around

Cairo is large and traffic can be heavy, so allow plenty of time for airport transfers and arrange a pickup through your hotel or a licensed driver, or book a ride in an app. For the Nile, domestic flights and overnight trains link Cairo with Luxor and Aswan. Check which airport your tickets use for Red Sea resorts.

How to pay less on flights to Egypt

  • Use the heat. December to February is the busiest and most expensive period. Late spring, summer and early autumn are hot, but fares and hotel prices are usually lower.
  • Compare the connections. EgyptAir has flown non-stop from New York and Washington, while Lufthansa, KLM, British Airways, Air France, Turkish, Qatar, Emirates and Etihad are common one-stop options.
  • Check Ramadan. It changes opening hours and daily rhythm, and its dates move each year.
  • Choose the right airport. A cheaper flight to Cairo can cost more than a direct one to Hurghada or Sharm el-Sheikh if you are heading for the Red Sea.

Before you go

Check passport validity and Egypt’s current visa process through the official portal for every traveler, and read your government’s travel advisory, because it can differ by region. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are commonly recommended, and tap water is not generally advised for visitors. See the CDC page for Egypt. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.
