Cameroon welcomes church, medical and community teams, and the country is large and varied. Government advice differs by region, so the first question is where in Cameroon your team will be.
Cameroon at a glance
- Main gateways: Douala (DLA) and Yaoundé (NSI).
- Busiest fare periods: June to August, and December to early January.
- Often better-value periods: February to April, and September to November.
- Climate: hot and humid on the coast, with heavy rain from about June to October; drier from December to February.
When to fly
The drier months, roughly December to February, are the easiest for travel. The heavy rains on the coast, from about June to October, can slow roads and make rural work difficult.
Routings and baggage
There are no non-stop flights from the US. Common one-stop routings use Brussels, Paris, Istanbul, Casablanca or Addis Ababa. Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare, so check before you pack. For donated goods, carry a letter from your host and an itemized list, ask your host which approvals apply, and declare what you bring.
Airports and getting around
Arrange a pickup through your host rather than accepting unplanned taxi offers. Domestic flights link Douala and Yaoundé, and overland travel varies by region, so follow your host’s advice.
Before you go
Read your government’s travel advisory for Cameroon, because it differs by region and in some regions warns strongly against travel. Check passport validity and the current visa process, including any e-visa, through the official portal. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required, and the CDC lists malaria risk throughout the country. See the CDC page for Cameroon. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.
