Angola is a Portuguese-speaking country with growing church and humanitarian activity. It needs more planning than many destinations, from entry rules to ground costs.
Angola at a glance
- Main gateway: Luanda (LAD).
- Busiest fare periods: June to August, and December to early January.
- Often better-value periods: February to May, and September to November.
- Climate: warm year-round, with the rainy season from about November to April and a cooler dry season from about May to September.
When to fly
The dry season, roughly May to September, is the easiest for road travel, while the rainy season can make roads in some regions impassable. Plan extra time if your project is outside the capital.
Routings and baggage
Common one-stop routings use Lisbon, Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Paris or the Gulf, and TAAG, Angola’s national airline, links Luanda with Lisbon and other hubs. Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare, so check before you pack. For donated goods, carry a letter from your host and an itemized list, ask your host which approvals apply, and declare what you bring.
Airports and getting around
Check the airport named on your ticket. Arrange a pickup through your host, because unplanned taxis can be costly and unreliable, and allow for heavy traffic in Luanda. Portuguese is the main language, so a translator or a host who speaks it is a big help.
Before you go
Check passport validity and Angola’s current entry rules, including visa exemptions or e-visa options for your nationality, through the official government portal. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required, and the CDC lists malaria risk throughout the country. Check the CDC’s current notices for outbreaks too. See the CDC page for Angola. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.

Questions, answered.
Are there non-stop flights from the US to Luanda?
We could not confirm a scheduled non-stop service. Most travelers connect once, for example through Lisbon, Addis Ababa, Johannesburg, Paris or the Gulf.
Is a yellow fever certificate required for Angola?
Yes. Angola requires proof of yellow fever vaccination for most arriving travelers, so carry the original certificate.
Is Angola expensive?
Luanda is often described as one of the most expensive cities for visitors, so budget for hotels, meals and ground transport, and ask your host about costs.
