How to find cheap flights to Africa (and what to ignore)

Everyone wants cheap flights, but “cheap” depends on what you compare. This guide covers the things that really change the price of a flight to Africa, and a few things that sound like savings but are not.

1. Be flexible by a few days

Fares to many African destinations rise sharply in the US summer and over the December holidays. Moving your departure by a day or two, or flying a week earlier or later, can matter more than any other tip. If your dates are fixed, such as a semester end or a team’s project dates, book as early as you can so you have the widest choice.

2. Compare airports and routes

A one-stop connection can cost less than a non-stop, and a different gateway sometimes has the better fare. Flying into one city and out of another, called an open-jaw trip, can also make sense if your project or visit spans two places. Ask for several routings to be priced.

3. Compare what the fare includes

Basic fares often exclude checked bags, seat selection and changes. On long-haul trips with luggage, such as students moving home or teams carrying supplies, a standard fare with bags included can cost less than a basic fare plus bag fees. Compare the total, not just the headline price.

4. One way or round trip?

A round trip is often the simplest and sometimes the better value on international routes. A one-way ticket can suit you if your return is open or you are leaving from a different city. Check any entry rules too, because some countries ask to see proof of onward travel.

5. “Secret” deals and flight price errors

Mistaken fares do appear, and they get shared widely. But airlines may cancel tickets sold at an error price, and some travelers have lost money on hotels and plans booked around them. If you chase one, book only refundable arrangements around it. For most trips, a real comparison of current fares for your exact dates is more reliable.

6. Spread the cost

A lower payment today is not the same as a lower fare, but it can make a trip possible. On eligible bookings you can pay over time with a provider that shows the terms before you agree. See how pay over time works.

Questions, answered.

What is the cheapest time to fly to Africa?

It depends on the country, but fares usually peak in the US summer and the December holidays. Shoulder months outside those windows are often better value. A specialist can check the days either side of yours.

Are one-way flights cheaper?

Sometimes, but not always. A round trip is often the better value on international routes. If your return is open, ask for both options to be priced.

Are flight price errors worth chasing?

Rarely. Airlines can cancel tickets sold at a mistaken price, so do not book non-refundable hotels or plans around one.

How do I compare flight prices properly?

Compare the same dates, the same baggage and the same changes policy. A lower fare that excludes a checked bag can cost more overall.
