Students heading to Kinshasa generally connect through a European or African hub. Because conditions vary widely across the country, checking official advisories matters more here than for most destinations.
DR Congo at a glance
- Main gateway: N’djili International Airport (FIH), Kinshasa. Lubumbashi (FBM) is the main hub in the southeast.
- Busiest fare periods: June to August, and December to mid-January.
- Often better-value periods: March to May, and September to November.
- Kinshasa weather: a drier season from about June to August and a wet season from about October to May.
When to fly
The US summer break and the December holidays drive fares up. The rainy season can cause flash flooding in Kinshasa, so allow buffer time for ground transfers.
Routings and baggage
There are no non-stop flights from the US. Common one-stop options to Kinshasa include Air France via Paris, Brussels Airlines via Brussels, Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Kenya Airways via Nairobi. Baggage allowances vary by airline and fare, so check before you pack. For travel beyond Kinshasa, rely on your host’s advice and current government advisories rather than assuming an airport or route is operating.
Airports and getting around
Arrivals at N’djili can be chaotic. Arrange to be met at the terminal exit by family or a trusted driver, don’t hand your passport or baggage tags to unofficial helpers, and avoid traveling after dark if you can.
Before you go
Check passport validity and the DR Congo’s current visa rules through the official channels, and read your government’s travel advisory carefully, since it currently warns against travel to parts of the country. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry, and the CDC lists malaria risk throughout the country. The CDC has also posted outbreak notices for the region, so check the current page. See the CDC page for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.

Questions, answered.
Are there non-stop flights from the US to the DR Congo?
No. Most travelers connect once, for example through Paris, Brussels, Addis Ababa, Istanbul or Nairobi.
Is a yellow fever certificate required?
Yes. Proof of yellow fever vaccination is required for entry, so carry the original certificate.
Is it safe to travel to eastern DR Congo?
Government advisories warn strongly against travel to parts of the country, particularly the east. Check your government’s current advice and your host’s guidance before booking any travel beyond Kinshasa.
