Flying to Taiwan: a guide for students

Travel photo for flights to Taiwan

Taiwan is well connected to the US by non-stop flights. This guide covers when to book, which carriers to look at, and how to get onward from the airport.

Taiwan at a glance

  • Main gateway: Taiwan Taoyuan International (TPE). Songshan (TSA) handles short regional flights, and Kaohsiung (KHH) is in the south.
  • Busiest fare periods: June to August, December to January, and Lunar New Year.
  • Often better-value periods: October to November, and March to April.
  • Typhoon season: roughly July to October.

When to fly

Summer break and the winter holidays are the peaks, with another surge at Lunar New Year, which falls between late January and mid-February. Typhoons can disrupt flights between July and October, so build in buffer time and consider travel insurance.

Routings and baggage

EVA Air, China Airlines and STARLUX Airlines have flown non-stop between Taipei and cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and New York, and United has flown from San Francisco. Taiwanese carriers often include two checked bags of about 23 kg in economy on US routes, though this varies by fare.

Airports and getting around

The Taoyuan Airport MRT runs to Taipei Main Station. For Taichung, Tainan or Kaohsiung, take the MRT or a shuttle to Taoyuan High Speed Rail station and continue by train.

How to pay less on flights to Taiwan

  • Avoid the peaks. Fares rise from June to August, in December and January, and around Lunar New Year. October to November and March to April are often better value.
  • Compare the carriers. EVA Air, China Airlines and STARLUX have flown non-stop from West Coast and some East Coast cities, and United has flown from San Francisco. Compare them.
  • Think about typhoons. They can disrupt flights from about July to October, so a cheap summer or autumn fare is worth pairing with flexible dates or insurance.
  • Check the baggage. Taiwanese carriers often include two checked bags of about 23 kg on US routes, but this varies by fare.

Before you go

Check passport validity and Taiwan’s current entry rules through the official government source. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country. Routine vaccines and hepatitis A are the usual advice, and dengue can occur in the south in the warm months. See the CDC page for Taiwan.
