South Korea is a major destination for Korean students and families in the US, exchange and church groups, and short-term service teams. Direct flights make it one of the easier long-haul trips to plan.
South Korea at a glance
- Main international gateway: Incheon International (ICN), near Seoul. Gimpo (GMP) is mainly domestic and short-haul Asia.
- Busiest fare periods: mid-December to mid-January, late May to early July, and Chuseok.
- Often better-value periods: April to early May, and September to November outside Chuseok.
When to fly
Demand follows two calendars. US breaks push fares up in mid-December to mid-January and from late May to early July. Chuseok, the autumn holiday, also sells out flights and moves each year, so check the date early. Korean universities run on March and September semesters, so students often travel in late summer and winter.
Routings and baggage
Korean Air, and several US carriers, have flown non-stop between major US gateways and Incheon. One-stop alternatives run through Tokyo with ANA or Japan Airlines. Transpacific economy fares often include two checked bags of about 23 kg, but US airlines and basic fares can differ, so check the exact fare and domestic connections.
Airports and getting around
The AREX airport railroad links Incheon to Seoul, and airport buses and taxis cover the rest. For other cities, the KTX high-speed rail runs from Seoul Station and nearby stations to Busan, Daegu and Gwangju. Install Naver Map or KakaoMap and Kakao T before you land.
How to pay less on flights to South Korea
- Dodge the three peaks. Fares rise from mid-December to mid-January, from late May to early July, and around Chuseok. April to early May and September to November outside Chuseok are often better value.
- Compare the non-stops. Korean Air and several US airlines have flown non-stop from cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, New York, Atlanta, Dallas and Houston to Incheon, so compare departure cities.
- Price a Tokyo connection. ANA or Japan Airlines through Tokyo is a one-stop alternative that can be competitive.
- Check the bags. Transpacific economy fares often include two checked bags of about 23 kg, but US airlines and basic fares can differ.

Before you go
Check passport validity and South Korea’s current entry rules, including any electronic travel authorization, through the official portal for every traveler. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country, and the CDC lists no major malaria risk for most itineraries. Routine vaccines and hepatitis A are the usual advice. See the CDC page for South Korea. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.
