Flying to Nepal: a guide for students and mission groups

Travel photo for flights to Nepal

Nepal draws students heading home or on programs, medical and education teams, and volunteers. The mountains and the monsoon shape almost every plan, so timing matters as much as the fare.

Nepal at a glance

  • Main international gateway: Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu.
  • Busiest fare periods: mid-September to November, and about May to July.
  • Often better-value periods: December to February.
  • Monsoon: roughly June to September.

When to fly

Autumn is the high season. Dashain and Tihar, Nepal’s biggest festivals, fall in the autumn and coincide with the best trekking weather, so fares rise from mid-September through November and flights fill. The US summer break lifts fares again from about May to July.

The summer monsoon, from roughly June to September, brings landslides, slow roads and frequent domestic flight cancellations, particularly to mountain airstrips. Teams working in rural districts usually do best in October and November or March to May. December to February is cold in Kathmandu and the mountains but dry, and fares are often lower.

Routings and baggage

There are no non-stop flights from the US. The usual one-stop choices are Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Cathay Pacific via Hong Kong. Many fares from the US include two checked bags of about 23 kg, but this varies by airline and fare, and separate domestic tickets within Nepal often have tighter limits.

For medical devices, solar equipment or educational technology, carry a letter from your host organization and an itemized list. Ask your host which Nepali government approvals or affiliations apply before you fly, because customs can hold or tax bulk shipments. Declare everything you bring.

Airports and getting around

Tribhuvan International can be crowded at peak times. Check the current visa process on Nepal’s official immigration site, and where an online application is offered, complete it before you travel to shorten arrival queues. App-based ride services in Kathmandu are generally easier than street taxis, or arrange a pickup through your host.

For rural districts, groups usually hire a private four-wheel-drive vehicle with an experienced mountain driver rather than using local public buses, and build extra days into the schedule for monsoon delays. Ask your host about road conditions before every long leg.

How to pay less on flights to Nepal

  • Look at December to February. Fares rise from mid-September through November around Dashain, Tihar and the trekking season, and again from about May to July. December to February is cold but dry, and fares are often lower.
  • Expect one stop. There are no non-stops from the US, so compare routings through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Hong Kong, and compare what each includes for baggage.
  • Count the monsoon. From roughly June to September, landslides and domestic cancellations are common, so a cheap monsoon fare can cost extra days.
  • Check separate domestic tickets. They often have tighter baggage limits than your international fare.

Before you go

Check passport validity and Nepal’s current visa rules through the official portal for every traveler. A yellow fever certificate is needed only if you arrive from a risk country. The CDC lists malaria risk in the lowland Terai region but not in Kathmandu or the high mountains. Typhoid and hepatitis A vaccines are commonly recommended, rabies deserves a conversation with your clinic, and anyone trekking above about 2,500 m should ask about altitude sickness. See the CDC page for Nepal. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time. Health notes reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as last checked in October 2026, and notices change quickly.

Questions, answered.

When are flights to Nepal most expensive?

Fares to Kathmandu rise from mid-September through November, when the Dashain and Tihar festivals overlap with the autumn trekking season, and again in the US summer from about May to July. December to February is often better value.

Are there non-stop flights from the US to Kathmandu?

No. Most travelers connect once, commonly through Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Hong Kong, depending on the airline and city of departure.

What paperwork does a mission team need for donated equipment?

Carry a letter from your Nepali host organization and an itemized list, and ask your host in advance which government approvals apply to medical or solar equipment. Declare what you bring.
