Uganda is a long-standing destination for church and NGO teams, and for students going home. Good planning on seasons, routes and the airport transfer saves time and money.
Uganda at a glance
- Main international gateway: Entebbe International Airport (EBB), about 40 km from Kampala.
- Busiest fare periods: June to August, and December to January.
- Often better-value periods: March to May, and October to November.
- Rainy seasons: roughly March to May and October to November.
When to fly
Fares are highest from June to August, which coincides with the US summer and the dry season, and again in December and January. The rainy seasons, roughly March to May and October to November, often bring better prices.
Weather matters for the countryside. Rain turns unpaved roads to heavy mud, and reaching remote posts in regions such as Karamoja or the north can be difficult without a 4×4. Students flying home should book early for the summer and December windows, and mission teams should leave buffer time on rural legs in the wet months.
Routings and baggage
Entebbe is served by Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa, Qatar Airways via Doha, Emirates via Dubai, Brussels Airlines via Brussels and KLM via Amsterdam, among others. Ethiopian is popular with groups, and on many US–Africa fares includes two checked bags of about 23 kg, but check the allowance on your exact fare.
Airports and getting around
Entebbe is about 40 km from Kampala. The Entebbe-Kampala Expressway, a toll road, can cut the journey to roughly 45 minutes, while the older Entebbe Road can take well over two hours in the morning and evening rush. Arrange your transfer in advance through your host, or use a licensed airport taxi.
Motorcycle taxis (boda-bodas) are everywhere, but they are not suited to groups or heavy luggage, and many organizations advise against them. Ask your host about the safest way to travel for your route.
How to pay less on flights to Uganda
- Look at the rainy seasons. Fares are highest from June to August and in December and January. The rainy months, roughly March to May and October to November, often bring better prices, though rural roads can turn to heavy mud.
- Compare the main connections. Entebbe is served via Addis Ababa, Doha, Dubai, Brussels and Amsterdam, among others. Ethiopian Airlines is popular with groups, and on many US–Africa fares includes two checked bags, but check your exact fare.
- Price the transfer too. Entebbe is about 40 km from Kampala, and the expressway can cut the drive a lot compared with the older road at rush hour, so a flight that lands at a convenient hour can save time and a night’s hotel.
- Leave buffer on rural legs. A cheaper wet-season fare is only a saving if your project can absorb slower roads.

Before you go
Check passport validity and Uganda’s current visa process through the official government portal for every traveler, and apply before you fly. We do not quote fees here.
Yellow fever: Uganda asks arriving travelers for proof of yellow fever vaccination, and the CDC recommends the vaccine. Carry the original certificate, and vaccinate at least ten days before you arrive.
Malaria: the CDC lists malaria risk throughout Uganda, including Kampala and Entebbe. Prevention tablets, repellent and bed nets are standard advice.
Other advice: hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines are commonly recommended. At the time of writing the CDC carried an Ebola-related travel notice for Uganda, so check the current level and any screening at the airport. See the CDC page for Uganda for the current notices. Book a travel clinic visit four to six weeks before departure, because some vaccine courses take time.
Health notes below reflect the CDC’s Travelers’ Health pages as we last checked them (October 2026). Notices and outbreak levels change quickly, so read the current page before you book vaccines.
