Spreading the cost of a flight can make a trip possible, but it’s worth understanding exactly what you’re agreeing to. Here’s a plain-language look at paying for flights over time.
It’s a loan, not layaway
With traditional layaway, you pay a seller in installments and receive the item at the end. With pay over time on a flight, the travel business is paid up front by a financing provider and you repay that provider in installments. The benefit is that your ticket can be issued right away, so the fare you were quoted is the fare you get. The trade-off is that you are borrowing, so the provider’s rules apply.
What it can cost
Some purchases are interest-free and others carry interest, up to a maximum set by the provider. The rate you are offered depends on you and the provider, so the only reliable figure is the one shown at checkout. Before you agree, look at three numbers: the monthly payment, the number of months, and the total you will repay. Our estimator shows a range, from 0% to 36% APR, so you can see the spread.
Approval isn’t guaranteed
The provider decides whether you qualify, and a credit check may apply. Not every booking is eligible, and eligibility can depend on the fare and the amount. It’s sensible to have a backup plan if you are declined.
Questions to ask yourself
- Can I comfortably make every monthly payment, including if my income changes?
- Is the total I’ll repay worth it for this trip and these dates?
- What happens if I need to cancel or change the booking? Refunds and financing are handled separately, so check both sets of rules.
- Could a different date, a different airport or saving for a few more weeks give me a better result?
If you miss a payment
Your repayment agreement is with the provider, and late-payment rules and fees are in its terms. Read them before you agree, and contact the provider early if you think you’ll struggle.
Groups and students
On group bookings each traveler checks out separately for their own seat, and everyone needs to finish before the group’s final-payment date. Students apply like anyone else, and a parent or guardian can check out on a student’s behalf if that’s easier.
